World news is the media jargon for international news or global events, whether sent by overseas reporters, or – especially with the growth of distance communication technologies like telephone and satellite TV – researched by local journalists. In some countries, there is a blurred line between world news and national (or domestic) news when the story involves direct impact on the national government or its institutions.
World News Now (usually abbreviated as WNN) is an American overnight news program seen on ABC and its local affiliates. It includes a mix of general and offbeat stories, along with weather forecasts, sports highlights, and feature segments; it also regularly replays segment and story packages from other ABC News programs. WNN is also known for its lighthearted and irreverent tone.
A number of renowned journalists have started their careers on World News Now, including original anchors Aaron Brown and Lisa McRee. It is regarded as a “training ground” for new ABC News anchors, many of whom go on to higher-profile positions on the network or with its local affiliates.
In addition, a small number of stations (for example, KTWO-TV in Casper, Wyoming and WVII-TV in Bangor, Maine) have previously preempted World News Now to air a simulcast of the cable home shopping network Jewelry Television. Both have since added the show to their schedules again. Similarly, until September 2011, three Citadel Communications-owned ABC affiliates (KCAU-TV in Sioux City, KLKN-TV in Lincoln, Nebraska and WOI-DT in Ames, Iowa) would preempt the show in favor of a simulcast of the NBC News program Today before clearing it for World News Now.
